STOMENNANO FARM IN CHIANTI
Written documentation of Stomennano date back to 1254 when the peace
between Florence and Siena was signed. Not much later Dante Alighieri
visiting the spot was so touched by the view of Monteriggioni to describe
it in its Divina Commedia "…però che come sulla cerchia tonda
Monteriggioni di torri si corona": (XXXI canto dell'Inferno).
Stomennano is a wonderful discovery for visitors to Tuscany. Although is
located only few miles from Siena remain a part of a quieter time. This
classic Tuscan farmhouse is part of a magnificent aristocratic estate
which has existed since the days it was a medieval hamlet. Includes
several farm buildings, stables, wine cellars, olive oil mills, a chapel
and a workshop. The estates produces its own chianti classico, olive oil
and vin santo wine. It is hard to say which is more appealing: the ancient
buildings, extensive vineyards, olive groves, forests and wheat fields
surrounding it, or the unique turreted walls of Monteriggioni crowning the
horizon directly in front of the estate. It may be less than two miles
from the four-lane superstrada that links Florence to Siena, but while
you're here you'll be hard-pressed to remember what the 21th century is
like. A long double row of cypress trees leads to this small corner of
Tuscan history. The stately mansion and the farmhouse have recently been
restored. The estate has been owned by the same family since the seventeen
century. The Grassi brothers now lives there with their Great Danes,
gentle giants, one bracco, the sweet dunky and two cats and they are now
offering them for holiday. On the grounds there are a bowling green and an
archery range, while stables, tennis courts and three golf courses are
only a few miles down the road. Hiking and bicycling trails abound,
leading you through the Chianti hills to countless hamlets, wineries and
perfect picnic spots. The nearest grocery store is only a 5 minute drive
away. You can stroll over to Monteriggioni, a minuscule
town-within-a-castle, have lunch, chat with some of the eighty residents,
and wander back home in the late afternoon. Siena, San Gimignano and
Castellina in Chianti are less than ten miles away, Florence and
Montepulciano only thirty, Lucca and Cortona just slightly more.
